Who Opened up Shop

Saint John, N.B.: Uptown Donuts opened up their shop in the historic Saint John City Market early this month offering up jazzed-up jam-filled treats.

Moncton, N.B.: The new Moncton events centre had their ribbon-cutting ceremony mid-month and announced that the new $113-million facility will officially be called Centre Avenir Center, as locally-owned Avenir Hearing opted to buy the naming rights.

Halifax, N.S.: The Exchange on Hollis Kitchen & Social, sister restaurant to the popular St. John’s Fish Exchange in Newfoundland, opened its doors in The Maple.

Halifax, N.S.: The Cheeky Cod Gallery opened mid September at 1528 Queen Street and showcases Maritime makers and art.

St. John’s, N.L.: Tulip Baroo Bakery, a small boutique bakery which features vegan and gluten free treats opened early in September on Harvey Road in the old Fixed Coffee location.

Summerside, P.E.I.: Avonlea Books has changed hands — Richard Kay who owned the bookstore since 1997 has sold the store to local business leader Nancy Quinn, who took possession on September 1.

 

Who Closed their Doors

Charlottetown, P.E.I.: The Prince Edward restaurant on the corner of University Avenue and Huston Street in Charlottetown has closed its doors after five years in business. Owner Paul Haddad cited personal reasons for the closure.

Sackville, N.B.: Marlin’s Midgic Market is closing its doors after seven years of business. The shop — which sold local crafts and gifts as well as Cuddle Down bedding — was a labour of love for Les and Katherine Marlin after they moved to the area from Quebec upon retirement.

Felix Cove, N.L.: After twenty years of business, Felix Cove couple Ed Hutchings and Cathy Whitehead have decided to close Alpacas of Newfoundland. The farm and gift store has been on the market since 2014, but with no buyers willing to take over the farm, the couple has decided to sell off the animals and close operations on September 30.

Halifax, N.S.: West Halifax Optometry, located across from the Forum, has closed its doors. Patients of the clinic can visit Ocean Optometry at 5240 Blowers Street for their files.
