New businesses in Atlantic Canada run the gamut this month — from modern speakeasies and Indian food trucks to barber chairs and bespoke suit shops. Plus it’s always nice to see the open column longer than the shuttered.

Here’s what opened and closed across the East Coast in November.

What’s Open

The Indian Express | St. John’s, N.L.
The city’s newest food truck, The Indian Express, started their engines on November 2. Currently they are parked at 11 Major’s Path offering up daily specials like butter chicken, pork vindaloo and pumpkin erissery.

Jasmine Syrian and Middle Eastern Food | Corner Brook, N.L.
Main Street in Corner Brook is now home to a Middle Eastern eatery. Jasmine Syrian and Middle Eastern Food opened its doors on November 4 to hungry patrons ready to devour falafel, kebabs and shawarma. Owner Maysaa Al-Omor and her husband Khaled Al-Homsi are Syrian refugees who arrived in Canada with their three children in 2016.

Tokyo Roll | Halifax, N.S.
Sushi spot Tokyo Roll turned on the open sign at 1598 Argyle Street next door to World Tea House on November 5.

Well Razed Barber Shop | Summerside, P.E.I.
The new barber shop in Wellington Centre, Well Razed, opened its doors November 6, operating out of the home of former nurse Darren Bulger at 93 Sunnyside Rd. Bulger opened the business after learning his craft at the Grafton Barber School of Excellence in Dublin, Ireland.

The Provincial Gastro Lounge | Fredericton, N.B.
Local lawyer and former cabinet minister T.J. Burke opened The Provincial Gastro Lounge, a 50s style speakeasy and lounge, November 7 at 550 Queen Street offering wine, cocktails and charcuterie boards in a mid-century modern atmosphere.

UStation | Saint John N.B.
Saint John’s newest coworking space is open for business at 87 Prince William Street. UStation is a membership-based company offering up office space, wi-fi and meeting rooms to small business owners, remote workers and traveling salespeople.

Indochino | Halifax, N.S.
The bespoke men’s tailor Indochino has expanded to the East Coast with their newest location in the Halifax Shopping centre.

Cafe Lara | Halifax, N.S.
The new coffee shop at 2347 Agricola Street opened on November 11. Cafe Lara is slowly rolling out their dining options like Waldorf salads and avocado and tomato baguettes.

Michael Hill | Charlottetown, P.E.I.
National jewelry retailer Michael Hill has opened their new location at the Charlottetown Mall with 10 employees.

Taco Lina’s | Halifax, N.S.
After Vandal Doughnuts closed shop in Gus’ Pub, one of Halifax’s favourite watering holes on the corner of Agricola and North Streets, Taco Lina’s has filled the space (and the stomachs) of North Enders as of November 17.

William’s Seafood | Oromocto, N.B.
The Fredericton seafood restaurant William’s Seafood opened up a second location in Oromocto on November 26.

Pizza Girls | Moncton, N.B.
The popular Halifax area pizza shop and fish and chips joint Pizza Girls + Katch Fish and Chips have a new location in Moncton which flicked on the open sign on November 24.

What’s Shut

The Anchor | Fairview. N.S.
Restaurant and bar The Anchor in Fairview announced via social media it was closing its doors on November 8 due to economic strains after two years of operation.

Lion & Bright | Halifax, N.S.
Lion & Bright, the cafe/bar/workspace on Agricola Street announced their closure November 12 via social media posts, stating the company will refocusing energy on the other half of their business, the adjacent Local Source Market.

Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community | Clarenville, N.L.
The BDO took control of the Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community on November 14 acting on behalf of the Business Development Bank of Canada who is owed $3.3 million. To date, it’s not known if the course will reopen next season. 

Charlottetown P.E.I. | Diversified Metal Engineering
The Island company Diversified Metal Engineering (DME) has announced they entered receivership on November 26 and the future of the company is uncertain. The company’s 140 employees produce a wide range of goods like marine exhaust scrubbers and cyclone separators with a big emphasis on the craft brewing industry.

Saltwire Printing Press | Sydney N.S.
The printing for the Cape Breton post will move to Saltwire Network’s Halifax press after an announcement of the closure of the Sydney printing facilities on November 30 with 14 employees affected.

Sushi Shige | Halifax, N.S.
Halifax’s Sushi Shige, located at 1532 Granville Street, announced in a Facebook post they are closed as of November 30.
