Despite some unseasonable weather and nasty flooding, the openings outweigh the closings across Atlantic Canada this month — plus a plethora of seasonal shops are dusting off to open for the busy tourist season.

What’s Open

ReStore | St. John’s, N.L.
The new home of Habitat for Humanity NL Re-Store at 323 Kenmount Road opened for business on April 5 to a lineup of customers. The store’s 9,100 square feet is a significant increase from their smaller location on Logy Bay Road and aims to generate funds for the charity, which builds affordable housing for low-income families from the sale of used furniture as well as overstock or discontinued building supplies.

Fortune Doughnut | Halifax, N.S.
Fortune Doughnut opened the first week of April, the second doughnut shop to open in Halifax this year, and has their oven pumping from their 2306 Gottingen Street shop. Vandal Doughnuts reopened after a year-long absence at 2150 Gottingen Street in February where 244 Snack Bar was located.

Bombay Cuisine | Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Bombay Cuisine opened April 12 at 339 University Ave. in Charlottetown serving up an array of traditional Indian dishes ranging from samosas, pakora and paneer tikka to chicken tandoori and lamb korma. Owner Bindeshwer Mandal moved to P.E.I. 11 years ago with the dream of opening his own eatery after decades of working in kitchens in India, Toronto and Halifax.

Pizza and Donair Hub | Cornwall, P.E.I.
Pizza and Donair Hub opened their third Island location in Cornwall on Saturday, April 14. Like the other two locations in Charlottetown and Borden-Carleton, Pizza and Donair Hub will offer delivery and take out options for their pizza, donairs and wings.

Avatar Foodtruck | Dieppe, N.B.
The Avatar Foodtruck started up their engines on April 15 offering up dishes like butter chicken with naan, Goan pork vindaloo with rice and beef kofte with mint and coriander chutney.

I’m Here & I’m Hungry Baked Goods | Fredericton, N.B.
This former market stall opened up a brick-and-mortar bakery at 880 Hanwell Road on April 16. I’m Here & I’m Hungry offers a selection of baked goods and to-go lunch options like chickpea coconut curry.

Pickford & Black | Halifax N.S.
The Murphy Group opened Pickford & Black on April 19 in the space along the wharf that used to house Gahan House Harbourfront, serving up fresh seafood and oysters.

The Rec Room | St. John’s, N.L.
The Avalon Mall in St. John’s is now home to Atlantic Canada’s first The Rec Room. The new 30,000 square foot entertainment and dining complex opened on Thursday, April 25 and includes a 200-seat restaurant, four-lane bowling alley, axe-throwing and virtual reality experience.

Delizioso Bistro & Sweet | Saint john. N.B.
What once was Li’l Gelato and Sweet Shop in the Saint John City Market is now Delizioso Bistro & Sweets at 533 Westmorland Road, which opened on April 27 serving up homestyle meals like chicken parmesan and seafood chowder as well as the gelato desserts it became known for since it opened in 2013.

What’s Shut

Halifax Press Grilled Sandwiches | Halifax, N.S.
After more than 5 years, the popular Halifax Press Grilled Cheese Sandwiches has announced they will not be returning for the 2019 season.

Needs Convenience | St. John’s, N.L.
The Needs Convenience at 95 Merrymeeting Road was shuttered Easter weekend. The Telegram reported in February it is to be converted into a laundromat.
