Obama event sold out
(But you can still win a pair of VIP tickets—here’s how!)

On June 17, Dianne Kelderman, president and CEO of the Nova Scotia Cooperative Council (NSCC), announced that former U.S. President Barack Obama would highlight the NSCC’s 70th anniversary celebrations in Halifax on November 13. The President will deliver a 30-minute address followed by an hour-long Q&A in front of a capacity crowd.

As expected, all 8,846 tickets to the event sold out in one day. If you weren’t lucky enough to get a ticket, you still have a chance to attend.

Atlantic Business Magazine, a media partner for this event, is also celebrating an anniversary this year: 2019 marks our 30th anniversary of publishing excellence. In recognition of this milestone, we are publishing a special Commemorative Edition comprised solely of our award-winning work.

As a further incentive to partner your corporate brand with this keepsake edition, we’re offering advertisers in our 30th anniversary Commemorative Edition the opportunity to win a pair of tickets at our VIP table (tickets are valued at $1,000 each).

N.L. firm celebrates 75 years of Pepsi production

Browning Harvey Ltd., the only local manufacturer of carbonated soft drinks in Newfoundland and Labrador, has been producing PepsiCo Beverages in St. John’s since 1944. All of their PepsiCo products are produced locally and made exclusively for the Newfoundland and Labrador market.

The current manufacturing facility, built on Ropewalk Lane in 1963, is actually the bottling plant’s third location. The first location was constructed as a small addition to the company’s biscuit factory in St. John’s West (they bottled Browning Harvey flavours there as early as 1931). In 1951, an impressive million-dollar dedicated bottling plant was constructed at the corner of Mill Lane and Water Street. Less than 10 years later, growing demand for their product saw them moving and expanding to Ropewalk Lane, where they’ve been ever since.

PEI Women’s Association announces new rural business centre

The Prince Edward Island Business Women’s Association (PEIBWA) is developing a co-working space in Central Bedeque that will provide increased programming and career-building resources for women business owners and professionals in rural P.E.I. Expected to open this Fall, the new Rural Women’s Business Centre is funded by the Government of Canada ($311,040 from ACOA’s Regional Economic Growth through Innovation program) and the Government of Prince Edward Island ($187,920).

In a press release, PEIBWA executive director Margaret Magner said the new facility will help her organization fulfill its province-wide mandate. “Not only will it expand our capacity in West Prince to Central Queens to build partnerships, offer training, promote networking and mentoring, and establish co-working space and advisory services, it will advance local women entrepreneurs and their ability to create a thriving business environment.”

Canada’s largest Costco warehouse reopens in St. John’s, N.L.

After 20 years in east end St. John’s, Costco Wholesale moved west—becoming both new and improved in the process.

The new 182,000 sq. ft. location features wider aisles and a larger selection of food offerings, including a wider variety of specialty departments. The on-site bakery, fresh meat and produce areas were all expanded; added were a hearing aid centre, photo centre, and an onsite independent optometrist. The food court became more courtly and the gas station grew by 50 per cent more pumps. There are also 300 more parking spaces, bringing the total parking capacity to 1,000 spaces.

Their goal is to share easy tips that will help New Brunswickers protect themselves and their finances from professional scammers and fraudulent activity. FCNB hopes New Brunswickers will stop by one of their pop-up cafes for a free coffee and snack, with a satisfying side of financial education.

Their top two pieces of advice? Check the license and registration of the financial professional you’re working with. And learn how to recognize and avoid common frauds and scams.
