John Risley’s take on the tragedy in the Middle East

In the last issue I promised a more in-depth look at events shaping the world: geo-politics, climate change and AI. There is not enough space in any single issue to give justice to each subject given the complexity and enormous importance of each, so please forgive my attempt to be succinct.

Tragic: no other word can better describe the current situation in the Middle East. Events are unfolding rapidly and there may well be material changes on the ground between my writing and your reading of this column. In the past few months, we have learned more about the extent of Iranian involvement in using Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen as their first line of attack and defense against Israel. Iranian military and religious leadership have been expert in using these paramilitary forces to de-stabilize the region. Respectively, these pseudo-armies have co-opted the leadership of their respective host countries at the expense of the civilian populations.
