You might call it an embarrassment of riches.

With the April opening of the Soundhouse in the recently expanded JAG Hotel, St. John’s now has at least five theatres that can hold 1,600 or fewer people.

That’s not including ballroom space in the various hotels downtown, or the larger nightclubs on George Street, which can host hundreds. Nor does it include larger indoor venues, such as the Mary Brown’s Centre, which can accommodate 5,600 concertgoers. Then there are the outdoor festivals, which can hold anywhere from 4,000—at the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival in Bannerman Park—up to the Churchill Park Music Festival, which can top out at 17,000, with the George Street Festival and Iceberg Alley somewhere in the middle.

One can’t help but wonder: is all this capacity sustainable? Can N.L.’s population and local economy support so many concert and show venues?

The answers might surprise you.
