How a small waste rock business grew into a major employer for N.L.’s Baie Verte peninsula
Shoreline Aggregates CEO Scott Bailey smiles and shakes his head as he remembers the leap he and his brothers, Ivan and Kent, made in 2016. They started their rock supply company to capitalize on a rare and immediate opportunity they thought had the potential to turn into a profitable, longer-term business.
If it worked out—“if” being the operative word—it would be a big boost to their family business. Not to mention the positive multiplier spin-offs for the local economy in and around Baie Verte, N.L.—a rural community roughly six hours by car from the province’s capital, St. John’s. If it didn’t work out… Well, the brothers had already agreed to go all in.
“When I think back now, we must have been nuts,” Scott told Atlantic Business Magazine. It was a big risk: the type of work was largely new to them, and they had a very short amount of time to pull it together. Still, he believed in it. They all believed in it. They also trusted the relationships they’d built over decades with local tradespeople, mining companies and suppliers.
