Boutique Hostel opens in Saint John
After months of preparation, the poshtel (posh hostel) Bunk Haus is ready for guests. The new addition to Uptown Saint John includes 24 bunks ranging from $59 for a night in the common bunk area to private rooms for $100. Guests of the new hostel, most of whom are a looking for an alternative to pricey central city hotels, can expect events in the large common areas complete with a small kitchen, bar and a long table for communal dinners.

Atlantic premiers expand immigration pilot program
In an announcement made Tuesday July 10 in Summerside, all four Atlantic premiers announced the expansion of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Project. The program, which focuses on attracting and keeping skilled workers, will grow to include 500 more spaces. As part of the larger Atlantic Growth Strategy, the collaborative effort between the eastern provinces, the AIPP facilitates the hiring of skilled foreign workers or recently-graduated international students and will increase the number of spots for 2018 to 2,500.

St. John’s International Airport opens expansion
Last week the ribbon was cut on the $72-million first phase of expansion at the St. John’s International Airport. What once was a limited offering of after-security food options is now home to a Yellowbelly Brewery and Public House, Newfoundland Chocolate Company grab-and-go as well as a Booster Juice and three Relays. Improvements also include doubling the restrooms and tripling the seating in the departures area.

Halifax company acquires UK-based Mediwise
Metamaterial Technologies Inc (MTI), based in Halifax, made the announcement last week that it has purchased London-based Medical Wireless Sensing Ltd., also known as Mediwise. MTI’s acquirement of the company, which is a medical research company developing the use of wireless devices in medical diagnostics, adding a new realm to MTI which focuses on smart materials and photonics.

Prince Edward Island welcomes Filipino grocery
Bloomfield is the new home of Sari-Sari Retail, a small Filipino store operating out of the home of Ruby Gadbilao and her partner Kent Clements. The three local fish plants currently employ more than 240 Filipinos, so the rice, noodles and a variety of traditional Filipino ingredients will soon be flying off the shelves. The store also sells fresh vegetables and a selection of snacks.
