Tammy Hardy, 39, is a critical care nurse in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Atlantic Business Magazine’s Essential Worker of the Week.
Her permanent position is in the coronary care unit but since the pandemic she’s been taking direct care of the critical covid patients who require intensive care.
Asked if she feels safe on the job, Hardy says that the healthcare administrators are taking many precautions to ensure the staff’s collective safety and well-being. “We have an amazing team of healthcare workers who are constantly researching and providing the most up-to-date information.”
Still, she recognizes that these are scary and challenging times. “My heart goes out to the families who can’t be there to support their loved ones,” says Hardy.

Hardy is not the only member of her family on the front lines. Her husband, Jeremy MacDonald, is a firefighter. Because they are essential employees and shift workers who don’t have the option to work from home during the pandemic, the couple sent their children to live with their grandparents. Their son is with his grandparents in Paradise; their daughter is with her grandparents in Burnt Islands, near Port aux Basques.
Hardy acknowledges that it was a difficult decision, but says knowing her kids are enjoying their family time gives her comfort. “We FaceTime every day,” she says.
“The people in our province need us to be strong right now and fight for them and their families so we can get through this,” says Hardy about her family’s sacrifice.
