Rosalyn and Blair Hyslop are the co-CEOs of Mrs. Dunster’s Bakery. The company’s fresh baked goods are delivered to 800 customers in the Maritimes and Maine twice a week. Having trippled the size of the business, the Hyslops recently opened a new 40,000 sq. ft bakery in Moncton, the first new bakery of its size built in Atlantic Canada in 20 years.

For this episode of Take 5 with the Top 50, Shane Snow, partner in the New Brunswick office of Top 50 CEO presenting sponsor Grant Thornton—digs deeper to find out what makes these award-winning leaders tick.

Snow begins… at the beginning, by asking where and how these childhood sweethearts first met (hint: it was related to business). From there, the conversation moves on to the meaning of entrepreneurship for them as individuals and how they interpret its capacity for community building.

They also talk about the Hyslops’ decision to purchase Mrs. Dunster’s in 2015, how they knew it was the right investment for them and why being “bigger than the little guys and smaller than the big guys” is a strategic advantage.

Drilling down, Snow referenced the Hyslops’ 2019 change in focus from their top line to their bottom-line growth. Specifically, he asked how it has changed the way they lead their company.

The final question deals with the intriguing notion of superpowers, mentorship and the Wallace McCain Institute. What could those topics possibly have in common with a pair of bakery owners? You’ll have to watch the video below to find out.

For each episode of Atlantic Business Magazine’s Take 5 with the Top 50 CEOs video series, we ask five questions of a Top 50 CEO award winner.
