Slow and steady
Expect Atlantic Canada’s economy to grow in 2015, but not much
If you’re dreaming the New Year ushers in a robust economy for Atlantic Canada, you could be in for a letdown.
In its 2015 economic outlook for the region, the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council is predicting a “slight pickup” in economic growth for the region this year. The Council, a Halifax-based economic think tank, notes that “province-specific factors” will drive this growth in each province.
P.E.I.’s economic uptick will come from “growth in its bioscience cluster, along with expansion of firms in professional and business services,” the Council wrote in its outlook released last fall. Meanwhile, in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Council says major project investment near record levels will drive economic growth in the province in 2015.
But just how much growth is the Council forecasting for each Atlantic province in 2015? What follows are a few indicators that illustrate where each respective economy is headed.
