3rd Annual Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada

Posted on January 02, 2025 | Atlantic Business Magazine | 0 Comments

Every year, we learn something new about what it takes to be an employer of choice. Time, and circumstances, change. As do the incentives to attract top talent.

While the imperative to make work “work” for employees is still a priority, with close-to-universal flex hours and hybrid work options, we found fewer employees working exclusively from home this year. A mix of remote and in-office seems to be the ideal mix for time-crunched families while also providing valuable connections with colleagues.

We also noted the resurgent popularity of professional development and career advancement, with every employer on this list offering, at a minimum, inhouse training and mentoring. Many support external training as well, with some contributing to education not directly job related. Employees want to know they aren’t stuck in a static position—that there are opportunities to move forward, or into a different job altogether. It’s to an employer’s advantage to be proactive with those discussions and prepared to invest in skill development. After all, promoting from within is a lot easier and less costly than recruiting/onboarding someone who may not turn out to be a good fit after all. Skills can be learned; personalities are forever.

Last but far from least in this year’s workplace evolution? Financial incentives are a star attraction—no surprise in this economic climate. Annual wage reviews with compensation increases (pending individual performance and corporate revenues, of course) have to be factored into the cost of doing business.

One thing that hasn’t changed with this year’s honorees? The focus on making the workplace a fun place to be. From employee recognitions to family socials, team-building to lunch and learns, these 32 employers know how to show their staff a good time.
