When an employee is under sustained stress, it can be harder to concentrate, solve problems, communicate clearly or recover from a difficult day. Sometimes that stress leads to time away from work. Sometimes the employee is present but struggling. Either way, there is a human cost—and a business cost.
The Mental Health Commission of Canada estimated that mental health problems cost Canadian businesses more than $6 billion in lost productivity through absences, reduced productivity while at work and turnover.
At The Calm Place, we believe wellness training should help people understand what stress feels like in their own bodies, giving them something useful to do when it happens. When the nervous system is on high alert, even an ordinary meeting or decision can feel harder to navigate. Learning to notice those signs and gradually return to a calmer state can help employees meet challenges with greater clarity.

We focus on practical skills people can use in the middle of a real workday. One person might try a few comfortable, slower breaths with a gentle, longer exhale; research on paced breathing shows that breathing patterns interact with changes in heart rate, although a longer exhale is not uniquely effective for everyone.
Another might use a strong taste, such as sour candy, as a sensory cue to bring their attention back to the present. We explain why a strategy may help, practise it together and encourage people to find options that suit them.
The workplace itself matters just as much. Employees cannot be expected to regulate their way through an environment that continually overwhelms them. Managers can learn to recognize signs of strain, communicate without judgment and respond with flexibility while still meeting the needs of the business. A trauma informed approach means considering the person behind the behaviour without requiring anyone to disclose their private history.

The Calm Place has a team of 50 professionals, including licensed psychologists and other clinicians with expertise in mental health, trauma and stress. We are passionate about making that expertise accessible and useful to workplaces. We can shape training around your organization’s people, pressures and goals, whether you are looking for an introductory workshop, practical skills for managers or an ongoing approach to employee wellness.
