Though this is the third anniversary of our Employers of Diversity awards, it is also a first. For the first time, judging was conducted by a volunteer panel of Diversity experts (see page 30 for the list of judges).
Working with this group of experts made earning this recognition harder than ever. They considered whether an employer was diverse because they had to be (i.e. hiring internationally because they couldn’t get enough staff locally), or because they genuinely valued and sought diversity as a workplace value and competititive advantage. The judges also looked beyond submitted nomination materials to consider corporate websites and messaging. Was the language truly inclusive? Did the images in the nominee’s social media presence and promotional materials reflect a diverse work culture? Were DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility) policies in place and protected? How pervasive were those policies throughout the workplace? Did it extend to community partnerships and supplier relationships?
The judges were meticulously thorough, so much so that we have just four winners this year. It’s the lowest number of honourees we’ve had to date, but it’s also the most meaningful.
