“Hands-on experience that reinforced my classroom learning.”
–Christopher McCarthy
In today’s fast-paced economy, businesses need skilled, adaptable talent to stay ahead. College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Work Integrated Learning (WIL) initiative offers employers a direct pipeline to eager, educated, and innovative students ready to make an impact.
Led by Ashley Nguyen, Director of WIL Connections, the initiative connects businesses with co-op program students across various disciplines, from engineering technologies to software development. Employers gain access to fresh perspectives, up-to-date industry knowledge, and cost-effective hiring solutions – while shaping the workforce of tomorrow.
CNA’s co-op programs have already proven invaluable for leading companies like Sophos, a global cybersecurity powerhouse. Sophos has recruited students from CNA’s Computer Systems and Networking (CSN) program, providing hands-on experience that has led to full-time employment for many graduates.
“Sophos has been supporting our work-term students by providing exceptional industry experience,” said Stephen Warren, Dean of CNA’s School of Business & IT. “Many students transition into permanent roles, further strengthening Newfoundland and Labrador’s talent pool.”
Darryl Murley, a CNA graduate and now a Customer Success Manager at Sophos, credits his co-op placement for giving him a head start. “My internship was a game-changer,” he explained. “The experience and mentorship I received set me up for success in my career.”
Christopher McCarthy, a Civil Engineering Technology student at CNA, knows firsthand the value of work-integrated learning. With 20 years of experience as a materials testing technician, McCarthy returned to school to gain formal training. Through CNA’s co-op program, he strengthened his skills, built industry connections, and secured a post-graduation job with a company he has worked with for over a decade.
“My co-op placement provided me with hands-on experience that reinforced my classroom learning,” McCarthy said. “The mentorship and support I received helped me develop confidence and real-world problem-solving skills.”
CNA’s Work Integrated Learning initiative offers more than just student placements – it’s a strategic hiring solution. Employers receive support throughout the process, from job posting development to candidate selection and funding assistance. With many talented students seeking placements, it’s always the perfect time to get involved.
“Employers have the opportunity to assess fit, build long-term talent pipelines, and tackle pressing projects with additional support,” said Nguyen. “Don’t miss out on accessing the next generation of leaders and innovators.”
