Devil’s Advocate: The coming revolution

“The diagnosis from the machine will be better because it will have access to a huge database which no human could ever absorb. In short, in less than five years we will want to be diagnosed by computers.”

There’s a revolution on the horizon, but it’s not the one you might be expecting me to highlight. I have expressed my views in this column a number of times about the extent to which I am concerned we are living in a more dangerous world than at any time since the end of WWII. Those concerns are only growing.

However, it is the next phase of the digital revolution which is weighing on me at the moment. For the last year or so I have been trying to better understand the impact of generative AI. Readers will be well aware of the concerns which some, including the regulatory agencies, are expressing of its dangers, while others are euphoric as to the opportunities it presents. I think to some extent it will be very difficult for regulations to outpace the technology. Bad-use cases will emerge and regulations will follow, not lead. But let’s focus on why and how we can put this new and amazing economic engine to work for “good”.
