For decades, Dr. Abdullah Kirumira worked in diagnostic medicine and biotechnology while maintaining close ties to his native Uganda, where he regularly volunteered in pediatric clinics. Those experiences eventually led him toward a different focus: preventative health and nutrition.

Working alongside formulation scientist Glyn Davies, Kirumira spent several years developing Bioteem40, a Nova Scotia-based nutraceutical product combining probiotics, vitamins, minerals and other supplements into a single powdered daily serving designed to improve nutrient absorption and gut health.

Now headquartered in Windsor, Nova Scotia, the company—TheraPBios Pharma Ltd. —is expanding nationally through health and wellness retailers while also exploring future applications in long-term care and military nutrition. Atlantic Business senior contributor Alec Bruce spoke with Kirumira and Davies about the company, the science behind the product and the challenges of commercialization.

What does Bioteem40 do?

Davies: “Bioteem is what we call a new generation of nutraceuticals. It’s rooted in the concept that gut health is foremost and most important. What we’ve done is combine the therapeutics of probiotics to promote gut and digestive health with the essential vitamins and minerals the body needs to thrive. One serving replaces the need to take 30 to 40 dietary supplements. Our key advantage is that we’ve developed a technology for improved absorption. We microencapsulate or protect our probiotics and active ingredients from being broken down prematurely in your GI tract.”
