Nivatha Balendra is founder and CEO of Dispersa, a company that specializes in transforming food waste into sustainable biosurfactants. Biosurfactants are environmentally benign versions of the chemicals used to make soap and other cleaning products work. Hoping to decarbonize Big Chem, Balendra is working hard to offer biodegradable alternatives to synthetic surfactants, thereby doing well for herself and good for the planet.How did you think of this innovation?

What does Dispersa do?

“We transform food waste into surfactants. What are surfactants? That’s really just the technical name for a type of soapy ingredient that’s not only found in soaps, but also cleaning products, detergents, cleaners, cosmetics. They’re everywhere—the most widely used chemical ingredient, globally.
