The Barrington: Number one for steak and hospitality

Ignore, for a moment, that the Barrington Steakhouse & Oyster Bar in downtown Halifax uses only Atlantic beef products, which it ages and cuts inhouse. Forget that the classic chophouse—which also prepares a mean shrimp cocktail—routinely scores off the chart on TripAdvisor. What really makes this warm and convivial place special is its hospitality.

“We offer that traditional steakhouse feel and that home away from home feel,” says General Manager Matthew Brown. “We are always trying to create the best hospitality possible for our guests …When you walk in, you get that warm, dark ambiance with the leather seats, and the dark mahogany, and the jazz music piped in the background … We really strive for that traditional steakhouse feel.”

Of course, he adds, the proof is in the pudding … or, rather, the steak. “Our beef really is cooked to perfection, and served with fine wines, craft beer and East coast oysters to provide guests with a memorable experience.”

Meanwhile, says its writeup on Discover Halifax’s website: “Enjoy both classic and signature cocktails from a carefully curated list or select a perfectly paired wine to accompany your steak.”

Opened in 2016, the Barrington took a blow—like most of downtown Halifax’s eateries and entertainment venues—during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, over the past two years, the restaurant’s recovery has been strong and steady. According to Brown, that’s also due to its “something” special.

“We offer private dining for any size group, whether an intimate party of 10 or a large celebration for up to 200 guests,” he says. “The private dining spaces are chic and modern. Our Executive Reservations Manager is available to help guests create their own personalized private dining experience, paying attention to every detail.”
