Confidence level of business owners in Atlantic Canada runs the gamut
Small business owners are feeling confident about their prospects in Newfoundland and Labrador. In P.E.I, not so much.
So says the Canadian Federation of Independent Business in its August Business Barometer Index. The CFIB, which represents over 110,000 small and medium-sized Canadian businesses, found that Newfoundland and Labrador’s business owners were the most optimistic in the country with an index level of 72.7 in August. However, in P.E.I. the index level was 56.5–the lowest in the country.
Simon Gaudreault, a senior economist with CFIB, says it’s hard to pinpoint one reason why P.E.I. business owners weren’t confi dent in their economy, but he says the province’s index has been low for some time. “For example, if the traditional industries driving the P.E.I. economy
are in decline, it might be infl uencing the mood
there,” Gaudreault says.
