With four active newspapers and 20 magazine titles, Sean Murray explains why he’s committed to print

The medium is Murray’s message

Sean Murray is not your typical media mogul. He believes that top-quality content can be a force for good, and even success, in a struggling industry.

“As soon as you think you know what you’re doing, you’re not changing fast enough,” said Sean Murray, president and CEO of Advocate Printing and Publishing. “We live in Atlantic Canada and change of any kind is really difficult to implement, especially when things are going well.”

It’s safe to say things are going very well for Murray these days. He sits atop one of Atlantic Canada’s major media companies, with four active newspapers and 20 magazine titles (including the recent acquisition of Maine House+Design and Maine. Magazine).

Many media consumers have migrated to the Internet where 80 per cent of digital advertising runs to Google and Facebook, which don’t yet pay Canadian news providers for their content. Since 2013, at least 250 newspapers in this country—starved for revenue—have shut down.
