DOLLARAMA STARTS CHARGING FOR PLASTIC BAGS
With little pomp and circumstance, the dollar store giant Dollarama started charging a 5-cent fee for shopping bags on Earth Day (April 22) in an effort to become more environmentally conscious. Dollarama’s stock has maintained high value with a strong fourth quarter finish seeing a 11.5% profit increase and the company plans to open at least 60 more stores by the end of next year.

Cruise season has started in Halifax
The first vessel of the year, the MS Fram, made its way into port on Sunday marking the first day of what Halifax hopes will be the busiest season ever. According to Halifax Port Authority, the city’s harbour will see 200 scheduled ports of call this year, meaning 300,000 cruisers will be exploring the city’s downtown area throughout the summer and early fall.

New finance centre announced for Dieppe
Last Thursday, April 19, TD Bank declared publicly their plans to open a finance centre in Champlain Place. The new operation will provide as many as 440 jobs for the area with a corporate office offering services like general accounting, reporting and transaction processing. The $50-million building will also include a call centre and is slated to open in January 2019 with hiring processes starting as early as September of this year.

P.E.I government announces cannabis store locations
The provincial government has identified the third and fourth locations for their retail cannabis stores, at 85 Belvedere Avenue in Charlottetown and 474 Main Street in O’Leary. With hopes of renovations starting in the next month they are currently in the process of finding a contractor for the projects. With the two locations previously announced in Summerside and Montague, this marks four stores that will operate under the Cannabis Management Corporation.

Newfoundland grocery stores get online
Two Dominion stores in St. John’s will now be offering online grocery service. Loblaws has expanded their services to the Blackmarsh Road and Memorial Stadium Dominions offering personalized for a $3 fee ($5 during peak shopping hours). Shoppers can pick out their grocery staples online and their bags will be loaded into the car at designated parking spaces at the store within two hours. This isn’t a new service in the province — Newfoundland-based chain Coleman’s and St. John’s landmark Belbin’s have been doing it for years, and the latter offers the additional service of putting them away for you in your home.
