Three Atlantic Canadian cities were included on the 2018 YouthfulCities Canadian Index, which measures the youthful infrastructure for Canadians aged 15-29. Moncton topped the easternmost cities ranking 9th overall, scoring points as one of the best cities in the country for fostering entrepreneurship, as well as the highest number of post-secondary institutions and the low-cost monthly transit. Halifax took the 11th spot, garnering praise for all their public green space, but lost points for having the highest age minimum age to register a business (the age is 19; in St. John’s it’s 12). In last place, St. John’s came in 13th due to high youth unemployment and low walkability, despite placing second in the top five for education and having the lowest rents. DHX sells stake in Peanuts
The Nova Scotia-based company DHX Media is selling a portion of Peanuts Holdings, creator of Snoopy and Charlie Brown. After making the US$345-million purchase a year ago, DHX is selling 49 per cent of its 80 per cent stake to Tokyo’s Sony Music Entertainment for US$185-million. Once the deal is finalized on June 30, Sony will own 39 per cent, while DHX holds onto 41. The family of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz still own 20 percent of the world-class children’s content and brand company.

Loblaws lands license to sell cannabis in Newfoundland
Along with 14 other stores, grocery chain Dominion is solidifying the right to sell recreational marijuana in Newfoundland. Parented by grocery store magnate Loblaws Companies Ltd., Dominion will sell cannabis from their already existing tobacco shops in ten locations across province. Overall, 86 proposals were considered for the list of qualified retailers by Cannabis NL, a division of the Newfoundland Labrador Liquor Corp.

Costco to open new location in Moncton
Bulk big box store Costco has officially announced their new location in Moncton, to be located on the corner of Elmwood Drive and the TCH. The Granite Centre location will be New Brunswick’s biggest Costco with a 154,000-square-foot building and marks them as the first tenant in the new retail centre, with Home Hardware on their heels. The current Costco located at 25 Trinity Drive was not suitable for expansion and will close.

Crombie REIT to expand development in Stratford
The recently updated Sobeys store in Kinlock Plaza is going to getting a new neighbour. Development plans have been approved by the in Stratford, Prince Edward Island town council and will include a 10,000 square-foot Shoppers Drug Mart. Crombie REIT will be expanding their redevelopments with the construction of two additional plazas, which are welcomed by the council as need from potential business owners is on the upswing in Stratford.
