Survey sheds light on the impact mental health has on businesses

BUSINESSES across Atlantic Canada need to be aware of how mental health issues can negatively impact their bottom line.

That’s one of the key takeaways from a national survey conducted by Toronto-based human resources consulting firm Morneau Shepell Ltd. The survey, which the firm conducted in co-operation with Bell Canada and Queen’s University, found that 33 per cent of working Canadians reported having, or having had, a mental health condition such as depression or an anxiety disorder.

And that’s not all. The survey found 58 per cent of employees said their productivity had been negatively impacted by stress at work. On the flip side, the survey also showed there were plenty of benefits to employers who fostered good mental health in their workplaces.
