I admit this is a strange title and particularly so in this case. Usually when I sit down to write these op-eds, I do so with a great deal of conviction as to what I am thinking and what I want to say. And I try and share those thoughts, the reasoning behind them and any conclusions that follow. I have thought a lot about what subject matter I would focus on for this piece and haven’t been able to decide which of the following subjects warrants the most attention. These are, the energy picture, climate, the impacts of AI and the world’s current geopolitical situation. Each is of huge importance.
In the past two months I have been to three events during which all of these subjects were addressed or discussed by world leading experts. I came away with a mixture of awe, fear, intimidation and a belief that education on these topics is of paramount importance if we are to spur on the sort of action each requires. We cannot possibly begin, as a community, as a country and as a world, to adequately cope with the challenges each will impose absent a general understanding of the threats and opportunities in front of us. Given the complexity of every one of these subjects, I propose to deal with them one at a time over the next few issues.
For the purposes of this edition, perhaps a bit of a teaser on each is appropriate.
