Nova Scotia Power to illuminate New Dawn Centre
The New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation in the north end of Sydney will soon be receiving an upgrade thanks to the $250,000 donation from Nova Scotia Power. The Friday announcement outlined the new renovations and the new tools that will fill the Nova Scotia Power Makerspace workshop, part of the new pilot project for the centre. The workshop, aimed to foster the growth of entrepreneurism in tech engineering, will have spaces for youth and adults who want to work with robotics, electronics and 3D printing.

Moncton’s new downtown events centre officially anointed
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for Moncton’s downtown events centre were accompanied by free concerts and tours over the weekend, all with a new name. The new $113-million facility will officially be called Centre Avenir Center, as Avenir Hearing opted to buy the naming rights. Spearheaded by Dr. Denis LeBlanc, the founder and president of Avenir, the company runs 11 hearing clinics across New Brunswick.

New hotel slated for old Charlottetown nightclub
Myron’s nightclub in Charlottetown, which has remained vacant for the past decade, is destined to be a new hotel. Homburg Atlantic Inc. has purchased the former bar and plans to open the doors of Arts Hotel in May 2020. The 105-room property is still in planning stages but will align with the other Homburg Atlantic Inc. properties like the Holman Grand, to be managed by Dyne Holdings Inc. of Charlottetown. There are plans for artwork to be the focus in the design, including works by Salvador Dali.

Saint John construction company funds new UNB research centre
OSCO, the Saint John-based construction company, is investing $2 million to the University of New Brunswick to establish the Centre for Off-site Construction. Off-site construction is the planning and building of elements in a controlled facility which are then assembled onsite, and it’s more sustainable than traditional onsite construction. The investment will help to fund research in this area.

Memorial University’s Signal Hill campus to open with new name
With the opening of Memorial University’s Signal Hill campus in St. John’s comes a new name. The $7-million contribution from Emera Inc. to support innovation and entrepreneurship in Newfoundland and Labrador ensured the company’s name will grace the doorway — the campus will be called the Emera Innovation Exchange when it opens officially on September 29th. The funding will support the campus, as well as innovation organizations like the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship, the Centre for Social Enterprise and the Genesis Centre.
