100 men who give a damn: A Few (more than 100) Good Men

Well our first meeting has come and gone and we really couldn’t be happier with how things went!

By the time the evening of our meeting came around we had 106 members which meant that whichever charity the membership chose could expect to receive in excess of $10,000.

Before we got down to business we enjoyed music by Avalon Stanley and an ice-breaker by comedian Brian Aylward, both of which were great additions to the evening.

Once it was time to get to work we had three members nominate charities: John Hutton (The Progress Club), Kevin Casey (Young Adult Cancer Canada) and Chris Bishop (The Autism Society of NL). John Atkins’ team at JAC (JAC.co) put together excellent videos profiling each charity which were shown to the members after which we heard from the nominating member. The videos can each be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/user/100MenNL

Once the members voted it was determined that Young Adult Cancer Canada would be the charity to receive the funds from our first meeting. While YACC received the most votes, the meeting proved to be a great opportunity to learn about three organizations that are making a significant difference in our community.

In the lead-up to the meeting we met with our Super Start-up mentor, Steve Winter as well as Greg Gill who is the Director of Marketing and Communications at the NLC. They were very supportive and provided us with gift cards to use as prizes and they will also be profiling us in their e-newsletter and on their website. The financial portion of the Start-up program has been of great benefit in helping us get started and while we haven’t spent it all yet there is sure to be additional costs leading up to our next meeting, especially as our membership continues to grow.

We are very grateful for the support that we have received from the community including Nova Physio who was kind enough to provide a door prize for the event.

We also have to thank the media for helping us to get our message out and helping to promote the great charities that we profiled at the meeting.

At the time of writing we have 118 members and we are looking forward to seeing if we can get to 150 so that we can make an even bigger impact at our next meeting in October.

We are very pleased to pass along over $10,000 to Young Adult Cancer Canada and are excited to find out who the next chosen charity will be.
