With a long-established history in the construction industry, Eddy Group Limited has been operating in the Maritimes for well over a century. What started as a small sawmill has evolved into a wholesale supply distribution business for plumbing, HVAC, electrical and construction industries. Now with fifth-generation members of the family still part of the business, Eddy Group has expanded its presence across the Maritimes.

Starting small

This longtime family business dates back to 1895. Its founder, George Eddy, began operations by opening a small sawmill on Main Street in Bathurst, New Brunswick. This was a new venture for Eddy, an experienced craftsman who made and repaired wheels. However, even with limited finances and ageing equipment, he persisted through early setbacks and soon saw steady growth as a sole proprietorship.

Throughout the early 1900s, Eddy expanded into other areas of business, including a flour mill, a carriage shop and metalwork. In 1909, he incorporated his business as George Eddy Company Limited and his son Chesley joined his team of seven.

Building foundation

Chesley Eddy took over the family business in the 1920s and led a new era of growth. He quickly expanded operations by acquiring major lumber manufacturing facilities in Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. And he continued company growth throughout the ‘30s and ‘40s as his six sons joined the family business. One of the most significant milestones was in their hometown of Bathurst, where Chesley built the largest sawmill on Canada’s East Coast. The facility’s significant annual capacity allowed the Eddy family to expand their customer base across the Maritimes, Ontario, Quebec and the U.S.

Representing the third generation in management, Chesley’s sons played a major role in the family business’s pivot away from lumber. As the lumber industry started to decline throughout the ‘60s, they moved into sales and distribution of products for plumbing, HVAC and construction companies. After restructuring in the ‘70s, the company was renamed Eddy Group Limited.

During the next few decades, Eddy Group continued to expand its presence to have 10 branches across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. And the business remained in the family as fourth and fifth generations joined operations.

Standing tall

Today, Eddy Group remains a wholesale distributor for construction, HVAC, plumbing and electrical clients. After opening a branch in P.E.I. in 2023, Eddy Group now has 11 locations and a presence in every Maritime province. In addition to other accolades for their company’s management, this year, Eddy Group celebrates 130 years of history. According to its website, Eddy Group plans to make 2025 “a year to remember” with events and other initiatives for its community and valued customers.
