Summer is coming: food trucks are uniting, night markets are sprouting up and the Port of Halifax gets a boost from the feds — plus two more things you need to know about Atlantic Canadian Business this week.

Feds invest $47-million into Port of Halifax
In an announcement on Sunday, Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau offered up half the cost for an improvement program for the Port of Halifax — about $47.5 million. The $100-million project is two-fold and will increase storage capacity at the port by connecting the South End Container Terminal to the Fairview Cove Container Terminal via an existing rail line, which will help reduce the number of container trucks that pass through Halifax’s downtown.

Newfoundland food trucks unite under new association
Last week the Mobile Vendors of Association of Newfoundland (MVAN) was announced via social media channels. Spearheaded by the owners of Saucy Mouth food truck, Allyson Howse and Brad Gover, MVAN includes both food vendors like Johnny & Mae’s, Big Boy Baos, QVFC, Hitchen the Kitchen, and Ziggy Peelgood’s, as well as clothing seller Scout, MVAN will help advocate for improving the mobile vendor industry in the province.

Moncton’s night market returns this summer
The Moncton Maker Night Market is set to return to the downtown area come June 27. The three evening markets will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m on June 27, July 27 and September 5 on Oak Lane and will showcase vendors from across Atlantic Canada.

Holland College names new cafe after entrepreneur brothers
Renovations and updates to the new cafe have been completed at Holland College and it has been named after entrepreneur brothers from Charlottetown Danny and Kevin Murphy. Danny founded D.P. Murphy Inc. in 1980, while Kevin started the Murphy Hospitality Group shortly after. Danny and Kevin Murphy Café and Commons at the Tourism and Culinary Centre is a high-traffic area where many local events are also hosted.

Landmark ice cream shop closes
After more than 30 years, a landmark in Riverview, N.B. is closing up shop. Four C’s Dairy Bar at 390 Coverdale Road has sold the building and owner Rhonda Cudmore is out of the ice cream business for good.
