The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many businesses to send staff home or shut down entirely. The employees who continue to go out and perform their jobs in public spaces are essential to society’s safety, health and well-being – and they do so at great personal risk.
Atlantic Business Magazine wants to recognize and honour their sacrifice by naming an Essential Worker of the Week for every week this pandemic continues. Our first honoree is Ray Merriam, a former Top 50 CEO award winner who, at 68, has returned to his first career as a long-haul truck driver.
As CBC Nova Scotia reported on April 3, Merriam spends days on the road separated from family and friends. Truckers like Merriam ensure that there is food on our grocery store shelves, that healthcare supplies are delivered to hospitals and that other essential products get where they are needed. We literally couldn’t function without them.
Submit a nomination for next week’s Essential Worker of the Week in the comments below.
