New Brunswick company scores on Dragon’s Den

The makers of Moncton-based Tuxy have landed a deal with two Dragons. Tuxy, an athleisure  company designing fashionable onsies that look like two piece outfits, appeared on the CBC show Dragon’s Den January 17, striking a deal with Jim Treliving and Lane Merrifield for $100,000 for 10 per cent of the company. Since the episode was filmed eight months ago, Tuxy now has an online shop and are eager for the investments to satisfy their growing demand.

St. John’s auto group acquire collision repair franchise
Capital Auto Group have acquired the St. John’s franchise of Fix Auto, one of the country’s largest body shop services networks. Capital, who own several car dealerships including Capital Mitsubishi and BMW St. John’s, as well as Capital Collision Centre and UniglassPlus/Ziebart, will take ownership of the commercial property at 1250 Kenmount Road along with the franchise and its 13 employees.

Shuttered Sydney call centre on the rebound
After the abrupt December closure of Sydney-based call centre ServiCom Canada Ltd, things are turning around for the hundreds left unemployed just before Christmas. Iowa-based businessman Anthony Marlowe purchased the call centre at the December 18 bankruptcy auction for $1.5 million and 480 of the 530 employees are back on the job, first paycheck in hand. ServiCom Canada Ltd is still undergoing bankruptcy proceedings, but Marlowe says there are more jobs in the near future for the Sydney call centre.

Summerside restaurant closes
The Summerside family restaurant Local 311 has announced their closure via Facebook post after their shuttering in early January. The owners, Dave Ashford and MJ Doyle, say they will be filing for bankruptcy after claiming thefts from the restaurant totaling $100,000. The pair had taken over the restaurant, located at 311 Market Street, in August 2018 after being rebranded in 2016 when Lido’s Restaurant closed.

CUA offering $25,000 in grants for local businesses
The Halifax-based financial institution CUA has announced their 2019 grants for entrepreneurs, community and non-profit groups. In its fifth year of running, the program will divide the grants into three categories — $15,000 for small businesses expansion or startup, $5,000 for community or non-profit groups and $5,000 for sports and recreation activities. Organizations looking to apply can visit www.cua.com/grants and have until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2019 to fill out the application.
