Nova Scotia company jumps into the medical marijuana business

Truro Herbal Co. is going where no company has gone before in Nova Scotia.

The Truro-based business is on the cusp of being the only licensed producer of medical marijuana in Nova Scotia. In July, the company learned a production license it applied for in March was being reviewed by Health Canada. As this magazine went to press, Truro Herbal was waiting to hear if the department would give it the go-ahead to start building a 15,000 square foot facility.

Company president Evan Price says the company will produce anywhere from 6,000 to 15,000 kilograms of medical marijuana per year and the clientele it is after are Atlantic Canadians. Thus far, Monctonbased OrganiGram Inc. is the only licensed producer of medical marijuana in the region.

Truro Herbal Co. is trying to change that. Health Canada announced in April that homeowners could no longer grow their own medical marijuana, and Price says that means there is more of a need for large-scale producers of this product than ever before. “We want to provide a stable, reliable, high-quality medicine for the people who need it,” Price says. “This is going to help people’s lifestyle, ease pain and allow people to get back to work.”

It will also create work. The company’s facility, which he says will cost approximately $2- $2.5 million to build, will initially employ between 30 to 50 people and that number could increase.
