Mixed bag
The good and the bad of the fickle tourism sector in P.E.I.

Tourism is big business in Canada’s smallest province. In Prince Edward Island the sector accounts for approximately $380 million in economic activity each year, provides over 7,000 full-time equivalent jobs for its residents and accounts for seven per cent of its gross domestic product – the highest percentage of any Canadian province.

Given the importance of tourism to its economy, the provincial government keeps a watchful eye on visitation numbers. While the island’s busy summer tourism season is just ending, some of the visitor statistics for June (the latest statistics available as this magazine went to press), when compared to what they were a year ago, reveal some interesting findings.
