Serving Halifax and surrounding areas, Triple A Convenience and Pizzeria has been operating for nearly half a century. What started as a small chain of local convenience stores now offers fresh pizza and a growing menu of hot-and-ready food at its remaining location.
John, George and Tony Amyoony, founders of Triple A Convenience, moved to Halifax, N.S. in the 1970s to escape the civil war in their home country. Although they arrived from Lebanon with few physical belongings, they did have a family connection in N.S., an uncle who ran a small grocery store in Dartmouth. Determined to make a life for themselves in Canada, the brothers followed in their uncle’s footsteps and opened the first Triple A Convenience store in 1977.
The meaning behind the name was a creative way to showcase that it was a family business, with the triple A’s being the three Amyoony brothers.
While George and Tony eventually pursued a college education, John continued to focus on the business. Over time, Triple A Convenience grew into a chain of stores with 15 locations across Halifax, Dartmouth, Fall River and East Hants. Naturally, business began to slow in the ‘90s due to the increased prominence of other retailers like Sobeys, Costco, Walmart and Superstore. The heavy competition meant Amyoony had to remain adaptable and put in a lot of working hours.
However, when John’s daughter became terminally ill in 1993, he switched gears to focus on his family. Within two days, John, his wife and their four children had packed up and were on their way back home to Lebanon. The business was left in the hands of family friends, with John and his wife visiting Halifax annually to file taxes and check on operations.
After 13 years of living in Lebanon, in 2006 Amyoony and his family returned to Halifax to escape a rising conflict between Lebanon and Israel. After taking time to reconnect with the business and local community, in 2012 John decided to make a change by serving pizza at Triple A for the first time. It was an instant success, especially among university students. With Triple A’s location on Jubilee Road being close to Dalhousie University, its pizza became a regular late-night snack for students after a night of studying or typical university celebrations.
Today, operations continue at Triple A Convenience and Pizzeria on Jubilee Road in Halifax. While the brand’s chain of stores has since been sold and renamed, its remaining location continues to provide convenience goods, as well as a growing food menu including pizza, nachos, burgers and homemade ice cream sandwiches.
Still making dough, 47 years later.
